The Jackson family have farmed at Bilton Barns since 1981. Bilton Barns is a 390 acre mixed farm located just outside the seaside village of Alnmouth on the Northumbrian coast and only 4 miles from the famous market town of Alnwick.
In addition to Bilton Barns being a beautiful place to live farming and tourism are our main focus. Three quarters of the farm is in arable crops wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape which are mainly drilled in the Autumn and harvested in August and September. Most of our wheat is sold for biscuit making and the oats are grown for your morning porridge. Barley is generally grown for animal feed and oilseed rape is sold for cooking oil. We have a 70 head beef cattle enterprise, a large proportion of our cattle are bought by Marks and Spencer. The cattle graze our grassland in the spring and summer and are housed indoors over the winter. We also currently have 6 pet lambs that recent guests have greatly enjoyed feeding! There are many footpaths around the farm for guests to explore, maybe to find the most beautiful view or catch glimpses of our resident barn owl, crazy acrobatic hares and family of deer that are lucky enough to call Bilton Barns home too.
With increased interest in fresh, seasonal food and how it's produced, you may like to have a chat with Catherine who will be glad to show you around the farm and explain the realities of farming and modern food production - time allowing of course!
